Xbox 720's battle against used games

I heard a rumor that the 720 will be formated to not allow a game to be played on more then one system. That means no more trade-ins when you are bored of the game, rents to try the game, taking it to your friends so you could play from one persons house and have a few drinks. Also, if your system poops out, you would have to purchase all your games again. My question is, has anyone else heard this rumor and how much truth do you think is behind it?

I'llbet you $1 billion that this isn't going to happen. You know, in a way, the used game, rental, trade-in, and borrowing industry helps companies in a way. The used game and trade-in industry funds the stores, and renatls and borrows help captivate an audience. That being said, why would Microsoft try to destroy that?

If this is true, Microsoft is dead- end of story. They wouldn't recover from such a mistake, and who'd buy another MS product after they did this? Microsoft isn't that stupid, though. They would dismiss this idea in a milisecond.

It's because of this why rumors aren't reliable. Then again, its purpose isn't to be truthful, but to fill the gap in news while people are waiting on information on the next generation, while getting tons of traffic with these big story. I buy just about nothing until it comes from the company's mouth.

  1. There are a few factors to look at here.

    1. The media is pretty dry in regards to meaningful content so many game journalists sites are looking for anything to get hits.

    2. It is just a rumor, but many rumors often have a hint of truth to them. Some are even started by the real companies to gauge rather an idea will be accepted or not.

    3. Flat out stopping used games will lead to the collapse of the games industry. Everything from projects green lit to budgets assigned to games is determined by install base and market perception. Killing used games completely will alienate a large group of consumers who can't afford to buy new games.

Right now game publishers are too worried about money and not worried enough about being responsible to the consumer. The best and healthiest way to stop used game sales is to go all digital with content. But there are still many consumers you won't reach without a brick and mortar store.

  3. How about waiting until the next XBox is announced, then make theories? There's NO announcement from Microsoft about their new console.

I wouldn't believe ANY rumor (even if they were true) right now. To do that is like going out on a date with a girl, only to find out it's a guy.
