Can you play PS2 games on your PS3?

My daughter wants a game that is for the PS2, because there are none like it in the PS3 section. I have 160GB. Can I play the game in my PS3?

You can also download the PS2 software compatibility from the Playstation Store. The old PS3s had hardware compatibility where you were able to play all PS2 games. Software gives you access to most games. So if you download the software compatinbility you should be able to play the game. I forget which section in the store it is under but you should be able to find it.

  1. It isn't possible to play PS2 disc games on newer PS3's. The only model PS3's that offered this were the original 60GB and 20GB model with full hardware/software support and the first edition 80GB which had software support only. Sony phased it out in order to boost sales of PS3 games.

You can buy PS2 games on the PSN store that will work with your PS3 but the selection is very limited.

  2. You can, but you have to have one of the launch ps3's, which are the 60-80 GB ones. The Playstation Store got ps2 classics as of 2011, but they have a really crappy selection... The best one there is probably BloodRayne.
